The authors made a clinical analysis about 119 cases of surgical thyroid diseases during the past 3 years from May 1980 to May 1923 in the Department of Surgery, Kangnam St. Mary¢¥s Hospital; Catholic Medical College, and the following results were obtained.
1) The sex distribution revealed -female was more frequently affected by both benign and malignant lesions than male in the ratio of 8.8:1 and 9.5:1 respectively. Commonly found in ages of 30?40 years(62.2%).
2) The. most common clinical symptom and sign was palpable mass on the anterior aspect of the neck, and the most frequent duration of illness was within 1 year(46. 2%).
3) The location of lesions were 36.1% in right lobe, 28.6% in left lobe, 13.4% in both lobes and. 21.8% in diffuse type.
4) The 1131 uptake test was within normal range in 75,7% of benign lesions and 85.7% of malignant lesions.
5) The thyroid scanning revealed cold nodules in 65.9% nd especially all malignancies presented as cold nodules.
6) Among. the 119 cases, benign lesions were 98 cases(82. 3%) and malignant lesions 21 cases (17.7%). The mo8t frequent .histopathological type among the benign lesions was nodular hyperplasia(32.7%), and papillary adenocarcinoma among the malignant lesions(90.5%).
7) The thyroid lesions were treated with total thyroidectomy(2 cases), subtotal thyroidectomy (43 cases), total lobectomy(56 -cases), enucleatlon or prtial lobectomy(15 cases), and total lobectomy with lymph nodes dissection(3 cases).
8) The important postoperative complications were wbund bleeding(7 cases), transient hypoparathyroidism(6 cases), and wound infection(1 cases).
